Can I heal quickly?\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Therapeutic illusions and techniques for \u201caccelerating\u201d therapy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Very often <\/strong>I hear these questions either in my office, over phone calls, or on social media from people interested in starting psychotherapy. Similar feelings and concerns are brought up by phrases like: \u201c10 sessions were enough for me to get to know myself\u201d or \u201ca year of therapy was enough for me to solve all my problems and the issues I brought into psychotherapy.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Initially, statements and questions like these remind me of myself 15 years ago, when I lived under the illusion that if I managed to get a degree in psychology from university and a licence to practise, I would be ready to cure anyone who knocked on my office door. Of course, back then, that whole illusion, steeped in deep ignorance, was like a ticking time bomb. Back then, I was oblivious to reality, just like those who ask me how long it takes to heal or those who think that with 10 or 40 sessions they will have found themselves, the grandeur, the complexity, and the depth of the human psyche.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Have you ever wondered why you do the things you do?;<\/em><\/strong> Have you ever wondered why you think the way you think and feel the way you feel? If you are genuinely interested, the journey is long. You will find the answers on many levels:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One level is that <strong>we do what we do because we are human<\/strong>, which means that as a species our behaviour is driven by the specific characteristics of our kind. Thus, the answers are lost within millions of years of human evolution. You also do what you do <strong>due to the gender to which you belong <\/strong>and how this has been shaped both evolutionarily and socially across the years, cultures, and civilisations of each place. Furthermore, parts of your self have been shaped because you were born in the country you were born in under specific <strong>economic, geographical, and socio-political conditions<\/strong> which shaped you even before you were born. The most difficult to trace root causes of your identity come from <strong>previous generations and, passing through the being of your parents<\/strong> (after they have first formed their own identities), are transferred to you as early as your embryonic life. <strong><em>Although your interaction and co-shaping with your environment never stops, the first 5 years of your life shape a large part of your identity.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I do not know if I managed to capture within a single paragraph the <strong>complexity of human existence<\/strong> and its many dimensions. However, it is a taste of how many things one can discover about themselves on the psychotherapeutic journey. The question <strong>who am I<\/strong> has no answer, and in my opinion, it should not have one. The way we approach it in psychotherapy is by process of elimination. I invite you to view all the aforementioned levels of human understanding that I described\u2014which, incidentally, are illuminated by the respective sciences (anthropology, psychology, evolutionary psychology, biology, sociology, etc.)\u2014like the layers of an onion. The truest, most authentic, untraumatised, core self lies at the centre of the onion. To be able to meet it <strong>you first need to discover not what you are, but what you are not<\/strong>. \u038c\u03c3\u03bf \u03b1\u03bd\u03b1\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03cd\u03c0\u03c4\u03b5\u03b9\u03c2
