It's simply that, without realising it, <strong>you bring along two completely different pictures <\/strong>of what these days mean to each of you. And neither of them has ever been spoken aloud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This article won't tell you how to \u00absurvive\u00bb a holiday together. We will simply attempt to understand what is really happening<ins>,<\/ins> when two people who love each other shout at one another over the breakfast buffet!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why do you argue over \u201csilly things\u201d on holiday?;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nikos and Eleni came for therapy in September, a few days after returning from a holiday that \u00abruined their summer\u00bb. They had argued about the schedule, the restaurants, the company. \u00abHe doesn't listen to me,\u00bb said one side. \u00abShe never relaxes,\u00bb said the other. It took three sessions for it to become clear that <strong>the issue was neither the schedule nor the restaurants<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>(The above details have been changed for privacy reasons.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conflicts on holiday rarely concern what is visible and almost always express two different, unspoken needs for care, relaxation or connection that have not been discussed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John Gottman's research showed that 69% of conflicts in couples concern \u00abgridlocked differences\u00bb, meaning issues that are never definitively resolved, simply managed.\u00b2 The hotel, the itinerary, the company are just the scenery. The real show is something else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On holiday, <strong>the daily routine that acts as a \u00abregulator\u00bb<ins>,<\/ins> disappears<\/strong>. There is no work to absorb you, no children running around, no obligations filling up the space. It is just the two of you left, along with what has been left unsaid<ins> <\/ins>between you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our therapeutic team at<a href=\"https:\/\/zen-yalow.213-158-90-34.plesk.page\/en\/i-omada-mas\/\"> ReConnecT<\/a> we often hear couples say, \u00abWe argued over silly things on holiday\u00bb. These \u201csilly things\u201d are almost always unmet expectations that have finally found space to be expressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What do we mean when we talk about \u201cunmet expectations\u201d in a relationship?;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unmet expectations are what we expect from our partner without having voiced them, and often without having even realised them ourselves yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Research shows that \u00abrelationship standards\u00bb, meaning <strong>our beliefs about how a relationship \u00abshould\u00bb work,<\/strong> are strong predictors of dissatisfaction when they do not align between partners.\u2075 And the problem is not that they differ<ins>,<\/ins> but that each person believes the other person \u00abknows\u00bb what they expect from them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think of it this way: one partner grew up in a family where holidays meant spontaneity, evening outings and lots of socializing. The other grew up in a family where holidays meant quiet, rest and time for just the two of you. Neither is wrong. They don't create the problems, they make them more visible.
