When this happens, the outcome is unpleasant, as it places a heavy burden on a woman's psychological health (confusion, guilt, despair) and strains her relationships with those around her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; So-called defence mechanisms are activated so that the woman can cope with the intense emotions arising from the abortion. The longer these defence mechanisms operate, the more the symptoms are repressed and manifest in non-functional ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The common&nbsp;<strong>defence mechanisms<\/strong>&nbsp;are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Rationalisation, when the woman uses logic to explain and invent reasons that led her to this decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reaction formation, whereby the individual develops firm beliefs regarding the correctness of the decision and denies any negative emotional experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Denial, when she behaves as if the abortion never happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>The&nbsp;<strong>symptoms<\/strong>&nbsp;that present themselves are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reduced self-care capacity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tendencies towards self-harm or suicide<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Depression<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increase in risk-taking behaviours, drug and alcohol use, anorexia, bulimia, promiscuous lifestyle, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Non-functional professional life<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduced ability to care for the family<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Intense desire for immediate pregnancy, with the thought that this will replace the lost child even though the reasons that led to the abortion still exist<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guilt, anxiety, panic<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Intense and frequent crying<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Low self-esteem<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sleep problems (insomnia, nightmares)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Intense anger<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Difficulty in making decisions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;
