If someone asked your grandfather: “What is important to you in life?;”
He would probably answer: “For my family to be well, to have a crust of bread to eat and for us to be safe and healthy.”
If someone asked your dad: “What is important to you in life?;”
He would probably answer: “It is to have a good job so that I have a house, a car and my family is well.”
If someone asked you the same question, you would probably answer: “To be happy within my relationship and then everything else..”
Our country lies between East and West. As if it somehow wants to unite and at the same time divide the two cultures, of collectivism on the one hand and individualism on the other. Previous generations, living under the collective umbrella, had a very strong sense of commitment to marriage and family within them. When someone dared to “break up” the family, they were socially condemned even in cases where this breakup also meant their liberation from abuse (emotional and/or physical). It was difficult back then to say “I'm leaving for something better”. The narrow framework of commitment to marriage and family sometimes acted abusively, because the couple remained in a dysfunctional relationship with disastrous consequences for the psychological development of the children. On the other hand, the same rigid framework of commitment acted beneficially for couples who, faced with the difficulties of life and living together, stayed together and found ways united to cope.
The value of individualism was born on the land we walk on today and where Aristotle once walked. It made its grand journey, reached all the way to America and now, “renewed”, exists among us and our partners.
More often than ever, when something goes wrong in our relationship, we think (consciously or unconsciously) of the solution outside the relationship, often in “someone else”.
Deoper social changes at the level of values come like a hurricane and bring with them new realities, and we are called upon to adapt to them quickly.
Ultimately, is the value of family giving way to the value of personal independence and fulfillment?;
