Anger is perhaps the most repressed emotion, the most unexpressed of all. Why does this happen and what are the consequences of not expressing it? Does it affect our physical and my psychological and well-being; ? Our relationships and general well-being ? The answer to all of them is yes!
Like all emotions, anger has a function. Its function, generally speaking, is boundary-setting, meaning to mobilise human behaviours that regulate distances (emotional and spatial). This function is triggered when a person is physically or emotionally violated. In other words, when something precious is moved away from them or something dangerous approaches them and their integrity is threatened.
Have you noticed what happens when children get angry? What is usually the consequence brought by their anger? Unfortunately, in the majority of cases, the parent will approach their child menacingly, raise their extended rigid index finger and with a loud voice and intense gaze will say: “You're angry? Who do you think you are raising your voice at me? Don't you dare get angry again or you're in for it!’’ ή “Stop shouting in front of everyone because you're upsetting me, do you want to make your mum upset?”.
What happens to the child at that moment?;
(or what happened when you, who are reading these lines now, were a child?)
Let's take it step by step then:
1. an event has threatened the child's physical or emotional integrity or has been perceived as threatening
2. the anger mechanism is triggered to protect them, therefore they feel anger in their body which dictates them to react in some way towards the threat
3. the parent punishes, “blocks” the function of anger
4. the child's body experiences guilt, that they have done something impermissible and hides the anger beneath the guilt with strong contractions in the abdominal muscles to restrict their breathing. As long as they do not breathe, they do not feel.
5. the belief is slowly built: It is wrong to get angry, when I get angry I upset others, they do them harm.
Ultimately, the body's and mind's basic psycho-emotional defence has been intercepted.
The more the story repeats itself and the parent (whose parents taught them the same lesson physically and mentally...) continues to punish their child's anger, the more the child will become υποτακτικό.
Τι γίνεται όμως μέσα στο σώμα μας ο θυμός; Το ότι δεν εκφράζεται δεν σημαίνει ότι δεν υπάρχει, έτσι δεν είναι;
